Work with Me
I’m always happy to hear from students and researchers who are interested in my work. Whether you are looking for a thesis supervisor, a research collaborator, or just want to discuss ideas — feel free to reach out.
What I Work On
My research sits at the intersection of computational social science, natural language processing, and online harm. Current topics include:
- Detection and measurement of hate speech, violent language, and abusive behavior online
- Misinformation and science communication in the age of AI
- Child safety on social media platforms
- NLP methods for trauma detection in text
Who Should Reach Out
Bachelor’s and Master’s students looking for a thesis topic related to any of the above are welcome to get in touch. I am particularly interested in working with students who have some background in programming (Python) or running online social science experiments, and an interest in applying computational methods to social questions.
PhD applicants: I am currently not hiring PhD students. If you think your research interests align closely with mine, feel free to reach out and we can explore options.
Postdocs and visiting researchers: I am currently not hiring postdocs. I am happy to discuss potential collaborations on shared research interests.
How to Reach Out
Send me an email at miriam.schirmer@northwestern.edu. Please include a short description of your background, what you are working on or hoping to work on, and why you think we might be a good fit. I read every email but may not always be able to respond promptly; I appreciate your patience.
